Être: The Verb 'To Be'
We all love talking about ourselves, who we are, our state of being and our position in this world.
Just like the verb ‘to be’ in English, the verb Être is one of the most common verbs in French. The verb Être is the cornerstone of French learning. It is essential to understand its usages and nuances in order to communicate effectively.
Using the verb Être
1. Sense of being
You can combine être with nouns, adjectives and adverbs.
Julie est une fille.
Julie is a girl. (noun)
Les arbres sont grands.
The trees are tall. (adjective)
C’est bon.
It’s good. (adverb)
2. Profession or occupation
You can use être to talk about your profession or occupation.
Nathan est père au foyer.
Nathan is a stay-at-home dad.
Nous sommes étudiants.
We are students.
Ma mère est ingénieur.
My mom is an engineer.
Note that, unlike the English structure, you don’t need to use the article a/an (un/une) before the profession or occupation.
3. Location
You can use être to indicate where you are.
Je suis au Québec.
I am in Quebec.
Vous êtes à l’école.
You are at school.
4. Auxiliary verb
When using the Passé composé, you will need the auxiliary verb être with some verbs.
Tu es allé à la plage.
You went to the beach.
Ils sont partis tôt.
They left early.
Être Conjugation
Être is an irregular verb, so it is very important to study its conjugation.
