Subjunctive in French Lesson

Today, we’re going to learn about a special kind of grammar called the subjunctive. The subjunctive helps us talk about things that are imaginary, not real, or things that we wish were true. It adds a magical touch to our sentences!

In this lesson we will explore different examples of the Subjunctive when making a wish, a suggestion and a supposition. We will also see how the subjunctive changes when we are dealing with verbs! Verbs in the Subjunctive Mood in French

Wish: J’aimerais que tu joues avec moi. / I would like you to play with me.

J’aimerais que tu joues avec moi. / I would like you to play with me.

Suggestion: Je suggère qu’elle travaille un peu plus aujourd’hui. / I suggest that she work a bit more today.

Supposition: Je ne pense pas qu’elle soit heureuse. / I don’t think that she is happy. 

 As you might have noticed in the examples above, a verb in the subjunctive mood is often preceded by “que”. 

All the verbs take the same endings for the subjunctive mood.

There are some verbs that have a regular ending but their radical (root) changes.

Faire- fass+ ending                example: qu’il fasse, que nous fassions…

Pouvoir- puiss+ ending         example: que vous puissiez, qu’ils puissent…

Savoir- sach+ ending            example: que je sache, que tu saches…

Vouloir- veuill+ ending          except for nous voulions and vous vouliez

Aller- aill+ ending                  except for nous allions and vous alliez. 

There are two verbs with different endings in the subjunctive mood: to have and to be.
